Saving Money On Diapers at the Grocery Store

I am all about finding the best deal when it comes to diapers and other necessities for baby, but sometimes I just don’t have the time or energy to shop around. Instead “diapers” get added to the grocery list. But even when buying diapers at my local grocery store, I still keep my eyes peeled for the best deals.

Shopping the sales

When it comes to grocery shopping, I am always shopping the sales. If I can buy 3 of something to save $1 on each, I’m going to jump on that deal. Kroger, Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and other such stores often offer these kinds of sales. Buy 5 save $5 or buy 10 save $10.

Kroger is usually my grocery store of choice. During their buy 5 save $5 events, they often offer small packages of diapers at a discounted price. While buying small packages of diapers might not yield as much savings as bulk buying, it can be useful if your baby is getting ready to grow out of his/her current diaper size.

If you can combine this type of sale with a coupon or rebate, you can actually end up scoring a decent per diaper cost.

Taking advantage of promotions

Promotions are one step further than a sale. Promotions include spending X amount to save X amount.

At stores like Kroger, this is usually in the form of spend $40 on participating baby products and save $10. Baby products include diapers, formula purees, wipes, snacks, and more. These sales can be a great way to stock up on all of your baby product needs. You can also use coupons to save even more money. Word to the wise, to get the $10 off at Kroger, your total after coupons needs to hit $40.

Target does a similar promotion, but instead of saving money at checkout, you receive a gift card to use on a future visit. The two most common gift card promotions they run are buy 2 participating products and get a $5 or $10 gift card, or spend $100 dollars on participating products and get a $20 gift card. Just like Kroger, participating products often include formula, diapers, food, bathing supplies, and more.

There are a few additional advantages to this kind of Target promotion.

  1. The $100 spend is before any coupons or discounts, so if you get the gift card even if your final total after coupons is less than $100.
  2. You can checkout multiple times to roll your earned gift cards into you next set of purchases. I.E. separate out the baby stuff from your groceries, and then use the $20 on your grocery spend.

Don’t forget the diaper coupons

If you recieve the Sunday newspaper, something I intend on signing up for one of these days, then you probably already know all about coupon clipping. But you can also clip store-specific coupons via a store’s website or app. Coupons could include manufacturer coupons, BOGO coupons, loyalty coupons, or percent off coupons. Taking just a few seconds before or even during your shopping trip to look for a coupon could end up saving you a decent chunk of change at checkout.

Shop the bargain bin for big savings

While baby supplies do pop up in the discount/clearance bins, diapers are a rare find. That’s not to say it doesn’t happen. During a recent shopping trip at Krogers, I found several boxes of 124 size 3 store brand diapers for $6 each! Shame that baby is already in size 4, or I would have gladly snapped all of those up.

Now if you are reading this thinking, isn’t the clearance bin only for damaged or expired items, that is actually rarely the case. Items can end up in the bargain bin for a lot of different reasons. Here are just a few.

  • They are close to expiration
  • They were overstocked
  • The package is damaged (i.e. the box of diapers is open)
  • The item is discontinued
  • The manufacturer changed the packaging and needs all existing packages off the shelf

Submit for rebates and diaper loyalty rewards

Once you’ve made your purchase, don’t throw away that receipt. You can often get rebate dollars or reward points for your spend.

Kroger now offers their own rebate program. Using the website or app, you can select rebates just like you would coupons. Just make sure you add the rebates to your account before you get to checkout. Your rebate money will hit your account a few days after your purchase. You can then transfer this money to your Kroger card to use on your next purchase, or cash out the money using PayPal.

There are also third-party apps like Ibotta and Checkout51 that allow you to submit rebates for certain products. Just select your rebates and takes pics of your store receipt. Approval is usually pretty fast, and these apps often offer bonuses for certain products or quantities.

Ibotta will even link to your store rewards account allowing you to skip that pesky taking pics of your receipt step. Just make sure you have your rebates selected before checkout so you don’t lose out on any earning opportunities. If you haven’t joined Ibotta yet, you can use my code to get started.

And finally, don’t forget loyalty points offered by the diaper companies themselves. Pampers has it’s own app where you can scan codes found on diaper and wipe packages and receive PampersCash. You can spend these rewards dollars on product coupons, Shutterfly gifts, gift cards, and even donations. Huggies recently shut down their rewards app and partnered with Fetch Rewards. Fetch works like other rebate apps, so you can earn rewards not only on your diaper spend, but on all of your shopping.

Combine those offers

Don’t forget to combine as many of these offers as you can to save big bucks. A coupon + a sale + a rebate = excellent diaper savings. Like that one time I found some diapers in the discount bin and I had a coupon for them and there was an Ibotta rebate. Score!

But even if you only manage to save a few cents this trip, just remember, every little bit helps when it comes to budgeting your baby.
